Mr. Robot Talks: Unspoken But Savagely True

If you have watched and or watching Mr. Robot, then you might know how unrealistically true the plot line in the first episode was (spoilers ahead if you hadn’t)!

With an 8.7 rating in IMDB, Mr. Robot kicks off with a discussion between Elliot Alderson and his therapist, Krista. In the very first episode, she points out his(Elliot’s) various issues. But Elliot doesn’t pay her much attention and seems preoccupied throughout the entire show. He’s always thinking something and not about how Donald Trump became The President of the United States. That doesn’t even come in the list of his plans, his plans for a better the world. Maybe he’s thinking that right now, if there’s an Elliot Alderson somewhere, it was a shocking report all right(no offence, Mr. President)! Who knows? Maybe there is an Elliot! Not necessarily with the same name but a same agenda in mind. Maybe we’ll get to see the Great Revolution that is so beautiful painted in the TV show(fingers crossed). Personally, I would love to see that.

“Some people just love to watch the world burn”-The Joker.

Later in the conversation he is asked about the society, about why he is so disappointed in the current society? The answer that followed was as blistering cold as the winter snow. I wasn’t even sure what I felt while listening to it. There was a bad assortment of feelings(my friend had to literally close my mouth afterwards). A lot to take in. It happened so fast that it blew my mind! True story. Later, I had to Google it up just to see again what exactly he had said. It made total sense to me then and that was enough to get me hitched to the whole season.

He went like “Oh, I don’t know. Is it that we collectively thought Steve Jobs was a great man, even when we knew he made billions off the backs of children? Or maybe it’s that it feels like all our heroes are counterfeit. The world itself is just one big hoax, spamming each other with our running commentary of bullshit masquerading as insight, our social media faking (as) intimacy. Or is it that we voted for this? Not with our rigged elections, but with our things, our property, our money. I’m not saying anything new. We all know why we do this, not because Hunger Games books makes us happy but because we wanna be sedated, because it’s painful not to pretend, because we’re cowards. Fuck society.”-Mr. Robot

My hats off to the script writers and their endless commitment towards making the show so realistic. “The world itself is a big hoax. Social intimacy is fake.” Damn! Some pretty deep stuff, eh? We might feel bad at first but if we look in the mirror we might find it hauntingly correct. I found it to be true. I don’t even remember most of my friends from middle school or high school. Do I have a bad memory? No. Am I bad friend/person? I don’t think so. It just happens when you move to the “NEXT PHASE” in your life. If you don’t trust me, rewind a little back, say when you were at your high school. Let me ask you now, if I may, how many of your childhood friend are still on your caller list? And how many of them do you actually call? Even if you don’t call them every day it’s fine, maybe once every month or so. I bet the answer of most people, if not more then at least 65% of them, will be a handful. One, five, ten at best if you are still connected to your previous phase of life.

We shouldn’t kid ourselves; we hardly TALK. Texting is the new TALKING. When we go our separate ways we hardly even text. We find ourselves a new group of people and we forget about the old ones. The best part is, just to make ourselves feel better or escape the situation rather than facing it; we make all sort of excuses. Some of them sound really similar to these-Oh! It totally skipped my mind or I have been really busy lately or you know stuff we all make up for an excuse.

Over the years, as we moved on from an age with no technological or less technological development to an age with rapid technological development, diverse social views, work life etc., whatever or however you want to put it, it has turned the social life into a nightmarish fiasco. We used to have Gladiator battles for amusement. We tame lions for fun. We find ways to reach Mars rather than reaching MEN.

From my experience and from one of friends wordings, what I have learned is, every thing is TEMPORARY. The very life we are living is a temporary thing. You never know what is going to happen next in your life. Nothing lasts forever. But whatever time we have in THIS LIFE, we should at least try to live happily and honestly and we should interact more as well. And I’m not talking about sending Facebook or WhatsApp text. It can hardly be called socializing. If you don’t like something just distance yourself from it. It’s better than faking it, won’t you agree?

“What’s the whole point of being pretty on the outside when you’re so ugly on the inside?” ― Jess C. Scott

We need to get out of our pseudo social life! We really need to go out more often rather than staying indoors and tweeting. We need to meet with new people. Share our day to day experiences. Grab a beer or coffee, whichever you prefer. Make dinner reservations and reach out to our fellow human beings. Just a simple “Hi” to the person living next to you can make his/her day. Don’t do it for your own selfish reasons but for having a real connection with other people rather than a phoney one. So peeps, let’s live more and pretend less.

This post goes out to everyone. I am sure going to try my best to live up to whatever I have written above and I hope you do the same! Whether you really change or not is up to you.

Interesting. Reaching out. Something we are slowly unlearning. Nice one
